Completed in 1892, the The Knickerbocker Press Building was built as a printing press for G.P. Putnam and Sons, a publishing company in New York City. The name “The Knickerbocker Press” is still visible in the slate roof on the main building. The building functioned as a working printing press until about 1934. At that time, the south building was subdivided from the remainder of the complex and functioned as a separate entity. Since 1983, the south building has been home to Media Lofts, a separate artist-in-residence condominium.
The remainder of the complex was acquired in 1948 by American White Cross Laboratories, a company that manufactured surgical dressings. In 1951, as the company grew, American White Cross added an International Style addition to the front of the complex. A small masonry white cross can still be found on the front of this addition. American White Cross moved from the building in the early 1990’s, and, in 1997, the abandoned complex was rehabilitated into loft apartments and rented for about a decade.
In 2007, Knickerbocker Lofts Condominium was founded. Knick Lofts consists of 45 residential loft units and 1 commercial unit. Many of the residential units feature the original wood floors and beams and soaring spaces. For available units in our community, please visit our listing page.
